1.6 million

Madonna opens the first of two Celebration Tour shows at Chase Center. San Francisco. 2.27.24

That’s the approximate number of people that turned up on Copacabana beach in Rio do Janeiro to see Madonna perform a free, additional show of her sold-out “Celebration Tour” on May 4. That crowd waited and grew exponentially for days ahead of the show, in temperatures that reached 30 degrees Celsius, and when the time came, they had fun. Together. They had fun.

They showed up to see the Queen of Pop dance and sing, get up and do her thing, and did they ever, too, during those rehearsal days that the rest of us could peep only online.

Brazil knew what they were getting, and they got it as a community (yeah, yeah, some bank footed the bill, so thanks for the show, whoever’s paying for it). And through the magic of the Internet, we could join in on it and squeeze that joyful lemon into a big ol’ celebratory lemon drop fit for our M, too.

I was impressed – going off of the behind-the-scenes shares of some of the artists on stage – by the energy surrounding Madonna in Rio in 2024. It was palpable.

1.6 million Lights for the Queen of Pop. That’s a lot of soul.

Biggest show on Earth by a solo artist, it should be noted with pride.

There is only one Queen, and that is Madonna. Nothing else really matters.

If only more people operated with that sentiment at heart all the time.
