Here They Come: America’s First Family

Ready or not, here they come: the Ricardos. Written and directed by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin.

Starring fellow Oscar winners Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman, Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos is an upcoming Amazon Studios biopic about the real-life man and woman behind the glittering Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, a.k.a. TV’s Lucy and Ricky Ricardo.

The drama unfolds as one of the couple’s regular weeks would have back in their heyday, from Monday table read to Friday audience taping. As Arnaz and especially Ball, one of the era’s biggest superstars, are threatened by shocking personal accusations, a political smear, and cultural taboos that could derail their hit I Love Lucy show, their careers, and their marriage.

This is not meant to be Kidman and Bardem yucking it up as Lucy and Ricky but two character actors portraying the actual human beings who played very many different, complex, and demanding roles in their everyday lives. Just like us.

I understand the couple’s children are involved as executive producers, so combine that bit o’ seriousness with the film’s Dec. 10 theatrical release date (and its Dec. 21 premiere on Amazon Prime Video), and violà, ya got yourself some awards bait.

Now imagine that bait’s coming at ya fast and furious on a conveyor belt.
