The Cuarón Collective

When I was very young (OK…younger), I traveled a bit between Lima, my hometown in Peru, and Miami, the tropical gateway to everything USA for someone like me. It was during one of those early trips that I picked up an issue of Teen People in which the Donna Karan fashions Gwyneth Paltrow wore in Great Expectations – the actress’ 1998 starring-vehicle adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations written by Mitch Glazer and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, co-starring Ethan Hawke Robert De Niro, and the late Anne Bancroft – were being showcased.

I recently revisited Cuarón’s Great Expectations, and the experience allowed me to see such a clear through thematic and stylistic line between that exciting, if low-key pre-Y2K offering and the filmmaker’s Academy Award-winning 2018 title, Roma. Such grand intimacy.

Great Expectations (1998) > Y Tu Mamá También > Gravity > Roma
